About Family Origins

Thank you for visiting Family Origins

I am Mary Ellen Campbell, a professional Irish genealogist and family history researcher based in Belfast but covering all of Ireland. I offer a full Irish genealogy service designed to help people discover their Irish roots. As well as undertaking bespoke Irish family history research projects and building family trees, I also offer a range of flexible services to support those who are researching their own Irish ancestry.

I have five years’ experience researching for others including Belfast Historian Tom Hartley for his book “Miltown Cemetary – Written in Stone”. While gaining practical experience I have studied family history and genealogical methodology with the University of Limerick and non-accredited courses with the University of Strathclyde.

Genealogy Courses

Family Origins can now offer personalised coaching sessions are for those family historians who have come to a brick wall in their research or wish to have one to one training on how to start their own research. We will not do the research for you, but will point you in the right direction, explaining any errors you may have made and making suggestions on how you could continue your research.

Each one hour session will cover a review of the research you have already done in the specific area required, followed by an action plan on how to proceed. Or if you are just beginning give you tips on how to start. Organisations in Belfast can also book us to provide a range of Family History courses for their service users, to take place on their premises, ranging from a two and a half hour taster session to a six week intermediate level course.

All sessions have a classroom element with a mixture of instruction and activities, and a workshop section when learners can research their own family trees under the tutor’s expert guidance. All courses require a basic ability to use a computer. As well as covering the basic records, courses also include hints and tips to ensure you enjoy the training and the further research you undertake.

We can now offer all of the above as online sessions. No course will have more than 10 participants to ensure each participant can get guidance during workshop element.
